Wearing God's Protection

He will shield you with his wings. He will shelter you with his feathers. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
Psalm 91:4

On the day of her wedding, my daughter, Marianne, and I did all the usual countless errands. We stopped to have our make-up done professionally, then our hair. She had the foresight to wear a dress that opened with buttons down the front, so she wouldn't risk disturbing all the hours of work as we arrived at the church to make our final preparations.

The photographer's assistant (her cousin) came into her dressing room at the church to give us our five-minute notice, and we still had details left to finish. We quickly unbuttoned her regular dress, slipped her arms out, and pulled it down, then eased the bridal gown over her head, carefully avoiding Marianne's hair and make-up. She looked so beautiful.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, she thought of last-minute things she needed to remember for the honeymoon. She left notes for her sisters, including one that said, "Has anyone seen my red plaid dress?"  We all looked for it.  The groom checked the car. We looked through boxes, suitcases, everywhere, and were completely stumped.

Later, after the wedding and the reception, the bride and groom went to change into their going-away outfits. Marianne came out laughing. "I found the red plaid dress!"

As she had unbuttoned it hours before, Marianne hadn't stepped out of the red dress, she had worn it from the waist down, underneath the wedding dress throughout the wedding and the party.  The gown was full enough that the dress was hidden--I know, because we've all checked the pictures!

You and I wear God's promises all day long. We have them for armor and protection everywhere we go, and we can wear them joyfully, filled with the blessings they bring. Whether or not you remember. Praise his Name!
