One year, one day

Today marks the first anniversary of this blog. It is also the eleventh anniversary of Columbine shooting, the day after my birthday, three days after my eleventh anniversary, a Tuesday, the 20th of April.

As I have said before, God makes days big enough to hold all their events--good, horrifying, or miraculous. Yes, of course the same day can hold all.  We saw that at Columbine: stunning, heroic acts by students and teachers in the midst of the chaos and insanity of the shooters.  We saw that in the firemen of the World Trade Center who went rushing up the Towers' stairs, as they gave up their lives trying to rescue others.

Surely God alone understands the mystery of how days can stretch to hold the full range of what they must hold. As we look back at our lives, certain days stand out as life changers, and those are the ones we remember--or some painful ones we might want to forget. Again, they are all part of the mix.

What are our lives but a series of days? How comforting and hopeful it is to rest in my God, who knows all the parts of all my days. To know that he has gone before me and is the Maker of my day, no matter what it holds: that gives me peace, even in the hardest times or the best of times.  I can rest in him, no matter what. I can rejoice and be glad, with tears in my eyes or a song bursting forth. The God who spoke the universe into being is holding my day. That is more than good enough for me.

This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
